A dog may be man’s best friend; diamonds may be a girl’s best friend; but the rain check is a bargain shopper’s best friend.
Viewed an inconvenience by many, the rain check is actually a fortunate thing in the hands of the smart shopper. Rain checks provide the same sale price, at a later date, when stock and selection are replenished. While waiting, the savvy shopper seizes the opportunity to collect more coupons to use in conjunction with the rain check. And when stock is plentiful, will be ready to make a great deal even more amazing. Plus, a special incentive for that exact product – such as a Catalina or new rebate – might just start the following week!
The key to rain checks is organization. Misplaced rain checks aren’t useful. Pick one spot, such as a special compartment in a coupon clutch. Safely stow rain checks, along with any coupons currently on hand, and review them often. Make a plan to fit revisiting that shelf into another shopping trip.
One more hint: Most chain stores, such as Meijer and Walgreens, will honor rain checks from store to store. The rain check may be obtained at one Meijer store, but then redeemed at a different Meijer location. This can aid in finding fresh stock and snagging that great deal.
So the next time you’re faced with an empty shelf, instead of disappointment, think opportunity!
